AS much as we want our defenceman to have good contracts ... the new NHL makes those contracts, that were signed, irrelevant now. Stall will sign for what he think he is worth and (or) he will get it from another team ( mainly the Hurricanes) that will want to ice all the brothers.

Stall will be able to get 7 mil next year ... but I hope for you guys that he signs for less money.

Can you imagine what our old first round pick, that was given to you freely, will cost when his time comes .... that will be very scary pay-day (MacD) for the Rangers.

I wish he was still on our team ... and that Gainey never made that move....

But anyway :-)

I dont see 7Mil for a shut down defensmen that contract would be worse then Dion's

Who plays pure shut down D and gets over 5 mil currently in the NHL? I know L. Schenn is up there but id say stall is better but that contract is bad to.

He shouldn't get anymore then Stralman did when he left. Around the same points, hits and blocks.

Staal made a concession on his 1st deal. His salary this year is 5.45 million. I'd be comfortable if signed an extension for about that much.

Sign him for 6x6 right now.

As for the prospects that can step in and replace him...Brady Skjei is the only guy projected to be a top-pairing defenseman in the system but that's risky. He's comparable to Ryan McDonagh which is awesome obviously but I don't know how I feel about letting Staal walk for an unknown.

Luke Schenn is a 5th defensemen on a team that could use some defensemen. Staal is twice the player Schenn is

Hes not worth more then 5 id say. He doesn't bring that much compared to others in that 6mil range. I always thought he was going to be the next best thing never made it past a bottom 6 top 4

Staal never made it past a bottom 6 top 4? What? He used to be our #1 before McDonagh and Stralman and AV trusts him enough to not have to match defensive pairings against teams like Pittsburgh or Philly in the playoffs. Staal played more time against Giroux and Crosby than McDonagh and Girardi did.

I'd be happy with Staal getting anything up to $6.25M a year.

Staal does both of those and is younger and just better.

Staal would have been the best D-man available. He's been a good player longer than Niskanen.

Most people throughout hockey figured Staal would make team Canada before he had one season derailed by a concussion and another by the freak eye injury. He was as good as it gets in his own zone and finally starting to jump into the play more and show his skating and stick handling ability. In my opinion he is a top 20 defenseman in the NHL right now if those two events don't occur. He was about 90% back to the Marc Staal we know by the end of this year. He shut down giroux and Crosby in consecutive playoff series. His career will only trend upwards from here on out.

I said Niskanen because he was a FA. If Staal was a FA this year he would have been the best one. Better than Orpik or Niskanen
